Look What the Cat Dragged In!

Our cat Barack was playing with this poor snake...
I thought he was a goner, for sure.
(The snake, not Barack.)

Then as I stepped in to focus the camera for a closer shot, the snake's head shot out from under his body and about sent me running to the house. Oh, he was very much still alive, and as usual, I was only wearing my flip flops! Egads!

Here's a close-up of the scaly critter's forked tongue...

He wasn't a teeny lil snake either... he was a good 2 ft long.

Anyone out there know what kind of snake this might be? (We live in south central Kansas near the OK border, if that helps.)

  5. Looks like a Western Ribbon Snake
Thamnophis proximus. Basically a type of garter snake. That's my opinion - I might be wrong.

  6. Actually, I'd prefer it was a dead snake! Cats have a habit of playing with stuff, and not killing it!

  10. Wow, nasty looking little bugger, but probably harmless. Good shots, though! The photo showing his face might make a great Halloween card, if you could come up with a sssssssilly enough verse. :)

  11. I agree with Richard that it's some kind of garter snake. Non-poisonous, so you were safe in your flip flops. Pretty colors, and nice shots, even if it was a little scary to have him come to sudden life for the camera!

  14. OMG Susan...it's not dangerous? I think I would die just to see this snake in real life (I mean in my garden, not in the zoo LOL). Congrats for your courage to take these pictures (I would run far far away LOL)...
