Small Town Snapshot Sunday

Click the photo to see more buzzard detail

Buzzards roost at a nearby abandoned building; they were feeding on something obscured by the tall grass. I decided to investigate further only because our neighbor has a herd of cattle in this field, and I was concerned that perhaps one of the calves had fallen to a predator during the night. My fears were assuaged, however, as I could not see what it was they were feasting on, so it must have been quite small. I wanted to walk further into the pasture to get better photos of the buzzards, but the heat and flies were terrible this day and I had to satisfy myself with this photo. (Which I wasn't really satisfied with!)

  1. It's still a great shot. The countryside around you makes such a stunning backdrop.

  4. In my first STSS I have a couple of pictures of turkey vulturs flying over Kingman KS. A year or so ago I spotted a whole flock (10 to 20) sitting on a tin shed somewhere in rural KS. I don't remember what trip it was but that was the most of them together that I had ever seen.

  8. Maybe you can't see the buzzards very well but the shot is really nice - who wants to see old buzzards too close up anyway? Ugly thangs!

  10. Cool shot! Buzzards usually take off when you get near them. Wacky looking creatures, though, huh?

  11. I'm back to ask if buzzards are different in Kansas - I mean, if the same word is used for different birds in Britain and America. Here, I don't think we would ever worry about them chomping on calves and, I would say, they are very beautiful birds - we always get excited when we see one, whether it is sitting on a telegraph pole or in flight.
