Unwelcome Visitor

Are words even necessary?

This critter is sitting on my back porch right now, and he WILL NOT LEAVE. I don't want to take the dogs out because it will be pandemonium and I will most likely end up in the crossfire!!

Update: I let Ringo out and when I came back, it looked like our friend was playing dead. So I took the girls outside one at a time, and we skirted around the critter, who never moved. Barack sniffed at him and then jumped back. I'm sure if I go look now, he'll be gone!

  1. We get them here too, they love to eat the dried cat food we put out for the cats. I keep moving their food, this time to a lawn table in the back yard. It probably won't take them long to find it again, (the opossums that is!)

  2. Who is the unwelcome visitor?
I believe we should all realise the space we take as our own once belonged to the wild animals that can now only try to share this planet with us.
Playing dead in the face of humanity's compassion seems a very good idea to me!

  3. I generally think all animals are adorable... but dang, opossums are ugly no matter which way you look at them! Still, I agree with Liz-- we have to remember that they were here first, no matter how grotesque or inconvenient! ;-)

  4. Poor little critter was probably trembling on the inside.
Dogs seem to lose interest when an animal plays dead...I think it's the thrill of the chase they enjoy.

  5. You got some great shots of your visitor, and he did a great job of playing dead! :)

  7. He's a cute little guy, but not one you'd want hanging around the back porch. Hope he moves back where he came from...

  8. You got better shots than I ever would have gotten because I would not have been within 30 feet of that thing. Yuck- I hate opossums! They are the most schnaggly things around. We actually went to a "pet show" once and there was a booth that had "exotic" pets - one of which was a "darling little lady" opossum. Yeah, right. My husband actually petted it - I was not getting near no matter how "soft and luxurious" her fur was. I'm worried about how scaly her tail was, and how pointy her little fangs. Maybe I'm a bit melodramatic about opossums... :)

Susan you must have a really calming aura to be able to get so close to wild animals and making these wonderful pictures...

    Congrats :-)

  15. opossums...
Yes they were there first. But don't forget that these mellow and passive creatures are benficial to us. Usually, where you find possums, you don't find rats! Many counties have passed legislation banning the killing of them!
