A Lightning Strike

Do you know how many shots I've snapped with my Nikon camera on a stormy day, trying to to get a lightning capture?  I've been known to snap off 300-400 shots and all I captured was flash lightning in the clouds.

So I'm at work several weeks ago when a bad storm came through our area... all I had was my cell phone and lo and behold, I managed to capture a lightning strike.

So it's blurry and grainy.

What do you expect from a cell phone camera?!  ;-}

Note:  The little building has extra gates and such for our K-Tag lanes and that other little structure which is cut off in the photo?  That's our tornado shelter.

  1. Capturing a lightning strike is on my photographic bucket list. Who cares that this is a cell phone shot?? YOU DID IT!!!! And it's really cool too!

    I've read a lot about techniques but haven't had the opportunity. I'm really excited for you.

  2. Hi Oz girl!

    And it's so weird to think that lightning starts from the ground up (I think I'm right about that - but probably just dreamed it...)

    I've also taken too many shots to remember and I've NEVER caught one...

  4. Oz Girl, about the second photo on my blog ... it's a plant in the Mesembryanthemum family (now called Aizoaceae - can't they make up their minds ?) I got the seed from the Reunion Island (how exotic!). It's called Delosperma napiforme (till they change it - it's a moving target).

  14. I haven't tried to capture a lightening strike - but - when I want to catch something fast moving in nature, I set the camera on the sports/running mode. Probably all cameras have something like it nowadays. For instance, birds flying in the sky are pretty good shots on this setting.
