The Biggest Bugs Live in Kansas

Just your average cicada... he crawled up out of these flowers as I was watering them the other day! I guess I'll have to admit... I have a fascination for big bugs. And snakes. And sometimes spiders. I just do not want any spiders on me. Then I do the spider dance...

  1. I love the dry fly shells. There are so many creative, artsy things you can do with them.

  2. I agree with you about spiders! This is a rather large bug. Wow! Great capture...but I wouldn't want it crawling on me either...

  6. LOL. You grab them by pinching the ends of their wings together and holding tight. They go crazy trying to get away. Capturing big bugs had been a major part of this summer. My older grandson asked me to watch out for big bugs for his biology class this year. I found a giant ant for him. Turned out to be a queen starting a new colony. She layed eggs in the jar we had her in. He has since put her in a container with sand to start her colony. Found a Cottonwood borer for him and a huge grasshopper. It's been a good year for big bugs.

  7. I find cicadas fascinating because of their life cycle. Love seeing the dried husks of their larval form.

  8. He'd do well at the ugly bug ball. I have to warn my wife if there's a photo of a snake in the paper or she will be running out of the house screaming

  10. If you want to get knocked out by bugs, go to the KS State Fair in Hutchinson and see what the 4H kids collect and put on display. I almost cried last year.
